THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE CENTRE

University study is a daunting experience for most first year students. For students whose first language is not English this experience can become fraught with difficulties. The daily tasks that students perform: attending lectures and tutorials, doing assignments and course work, writing essays and sitting examinations are even more demanding when these tasks are carried out in a foreign language and in an unfamiliar educational system. The credit and non-credit courses offered through the English Language Acquisition programme are designed to assist students whose first language is not English towards success at University.

Programmes:

Programme Staff:
These courses are taught by a team of well qualified and experienced language teachers. All have lived and worked in countries where English is not the first language and so are sympathetic to student needs. The senior staff includes:

Heather Rogan
Josephine Szabo
Dr Pauline Dagnino
There are 5 other full-time staff members assisted by part-time tutors.

Accommodation

During their time studying on the EAPC students may choose to be hosted by "homestay" families near the University of Auckland. The experience of living with a New Zealand family and joining in with family activities is a valuable opportunity to learn, practise and become a more confident user of English. Other available accommodation includes student halls of residence (during semesters and holidays).
